HOW SEX AND OTHER SOCIAL SKILLS ARE TAUGHT

Sexual skills develop through experience, but good knowledge of the psychology, anatomy, and physiology related to sexuality is also very beneficial.

Consent should always be completely clear, and this in turn is linked to whether people are able to recognize their own emotions, needs, and boundaries, and whether they can communicate clearly based on this self-awareness. There are significant shortcomings in this area, and the “text-message generation” is moving in an even worse direction.

There are many effective, motivating, and enjoyable experiential social exercises for all kinds of interaction, self-awareness, and problem-solving, but they are used far too little, if at all.

Well-made documentaries and educational films could also play a major role. Social skills must be practiced extensively because of their sensitivity and the range of emotions involved. Theoretical teaching should almost always be combined with experiential learning.

Good awareness and strong social skills (including sexual skills as part of them) would greatly improve young people’s self-esteem, happiness, and overall quality of life.

Unfortunately, our society is quite underdeveloped in these matters. It would be desirable for even those who design and lead education to acquire proper training and knowledge, so that it would be reflected in curricula, teacher training, and consequently in school environments.

Unfortunately, we are still waiting for this, and the current direction is not even the right one.
